New fifengine.de website
« on: February 29, 2008, 05:19:20 am »

Hey, Barracuda said he'd like the wiki to replace the current home of the engine's site.

I said that IMHO the standard mediawiki style is pretty scary and offered making it more "this is a normal page" style.

I got my hands on the nice skin used by http://wesnoth.org/ and changed it a little. Have a screen, and have the link to the current version of the skin.

Do you think a wiki has it what it takes to replace the current home page? What features do you want/need? Do you like the layout of the skin (the colors are likely to change, barra asked me to use the default mediawiki colors, but if someone likes the grey one, it can be kept as an alternative skin.)

I would strongly recommend using http://www.wikidot.com/. Version 1 has already been released as open source software, and the highly more user-friendly and extendable Version 2 is in the works. Right now, I'd recommend just using the wikidot.com option instead of attempting to install it yourself, seeing as it's not meant for intermediate users just yet (just the install I mean). The .com alternative still lets you use your own domain, making it "wiki.fifengine.net", even though they are the ones hosting it.

I can talk more about this later, but I got a boat to catch now!

Edit: I am starting to doubt that Wikidot will ever become 'just another great web app' that you can simply upload to your server and install in a matter of a few clicks. It seems the creator is hellbound on making it impossible to install for Windows/Mac users unless you're willing to install some 3rd party program and follow a long list of steps that probably won't get you anywhere...

Yes, please list all the features you think rule MediaWiki. I have little experience with wikis besides MediaWiki and a bit pmWiki (ugh) and would like to know if there is anything better than MW.

One thing I noticed is that only English and Polish languages are available. Also there is a strange "15-minutes lock" if you edit a page so no conflicts can happen. That reminded me of racing conditions an a neat article. But I just realized that this lock is just a mere 'warning someone is editing the page' so no problem there.

So far I have not found any superior features (only looking at the edit window) except for the fact that all extensions come apparently pre-installed. But bibtext, latex, video embedding and audio embedding, all this is possible with MediaWiki extensions.

So far it seems that it makes things easier for people who don't want to learn wikisyntax.

If anyone wants to play with Wikidot, I created a page http://qubodup.wikidot.com/ and allowed anonymous editing.

I agree with the decision of merging the wiki and the main website.

Some thoughts:

-The forum and the website/wiki should have the same / similar visual theme.

-I really like the way Wesnoth handles this. The first thing you see is still a functional and proper website that gives confidence in the project and presents it in a nice and inviting manner. If need be, the visitor can access the wiki pages. All in all the whole thing feels coherent.

-The first page should follow the manner of other OSS projects' websites including:
a short description, quick download links, news, a screenshot thumbnail leading to the gallery.

It looks pretty good. Could still use some modifying of course. And, how will you tackle the obvious downside of a missing side-navigation?

Also, are you really going to use MediaWiki as the front page? I was thinking; You guys are using SMF. Maybe you could use TinyPortal as the front page and light CMS instead of postnuke.

I finally found the time to summarize all ideas that were brought up at the forums and at the IRC channel about the new website at the wiki. Feedback appreciated:
http://wiki.fifengine.net/SandBox#New_FIFE_website

I'm in a hurry at the moment so if something is not clearly described at the wiki just ask and I'll answer as soon as possible.

We're currently planning to replace the old fifengine.net website with a new version that shares a common design amongst the majority of the website sections. The most important ideas for the new website are currently summarized at the wiki sandbox:
http://wiki.fifengine.net/SandBox#New_FIFE_website

Qubodup, a member of the freegamer forums, volunteered to help us with the design of the new website. We're planning to introduce a new mediawiki theme for the website (it's explained in more detail at the article linked above). You can take a look at the current status of the work in progress theme here:
http://wiki.fifengine.net/Main_Page?useskin=glamdrol

Unfortunately qubodup is currently quite busy with university exams so he won't have much if any time to work on the new website for the next 4-5 weeks.

How do you like the new bright colour scheme so far? Qubodup considered to use this colour scheme for the new FIFE website:
http://www.colourlovers.com/trend/websitecolors/173/2008/1/9/grantmx

All kind of feedback in this field would be appreciated. I'll open up a new thread for the new website at the forums tomorrow so we can discuss all related aspects there; please read the website proposal at the wiki! It would be great if Lamoot would have some time to help with brainstorming for the new website. Though I don't know his schedule so please let us know if you would have some time on your hands in the next days and weeks Lamoot.

I played with mediawiki/monobook a little (for freegamedev.net, but the position-layout is the same as I imagine it for fife to be)

The position layout looks good to me :-) Unfortunately I'm quite busy ATM so I can't devote any time to the website redesign. If you need access to the FIFE server for installing a test site or something like that let me know and I can set up something as soon as I find the time.

Long time no update. Qubodup was busy but we fortunately seem to have found a web designer who would like to help us with the new website.

I've moved all website-related ideas from the Sandbox article to a new Website one. You can view it here:
http://wiki.fifengine.net/Website

We can hopefully tackle the task over the summer; I'll be rather busy but with the help of Ned (our new website guru) we have a solid chance :-)

Some website-related news. A friend of Lamoot created a bunch of different versions of a new logo for FIFE. I really like the cube approach as it underlines the isometric support of the engine. Please let us know what you think!

Those look incredible. They look utterly professional, and beautiful. Much win, and *very* professional.
