Using an existing MMORPG server engine for FIFE
« on: December 16, 2007, 11:59:42 pm »

Dear all,

Let me first introduce myself.

My name is Alambik. I've worked for many game projects: one of the most relevant, for the topic of your project is called "Ultima Online" server emulation. I designed, implemented, and published a free game that uses "Ultima Online", a MMORPG client developped by EAGAMES. This game is called "TECHNOPHOBIA". It is a 2D isometric game, that is actually reusing some arts from Fallout. TECHNOPHOBIA is based, on the server side, on a C# emulator, known as RunUO, that treats the protocol used by "Ultima Online" clients and is easily extensivable thanks to an embedded C# scripts compiler.

Fallout is one of the games I preferred since a long time, for the background, the humor, etc...

I've seen your project om source forge few minutes ago. I'm quite interested in it, to have more infrmation, to see how far can go your project.

My rough idea would be to check how far is the development: for example, "you" may want to reuse the server side RunUO (open source) project for your FIFE project. If the game would propose like a "plugin" that would implement the protocol of Ultima Online and connect to an API of FIFE, that could perhaps make some sense...

The advantage is that the core server side management and protocol definition is here. Today, Ultima Online art integration cannot support fallout, since the isometric angle view is different (it means we cannot do a full fallout from Ultima Online using fallout arts).

Hope those info could give you some ideas ;-)

In case you are interested and may want help/people, go to this forum (french, but very active, everybody knows english there). I'm sure some may be interested in your project.

Dear all,
Hello Alambik :-)

Sorry for the _very_ late reply. The majority of the team was quite busy over the last weeks and although I added it to my todo list, I forgot to reply to it :-/

While implementing multiplayer support this way sounds like an interesting option, there are currently a lot of open tasks that we plan to tackle in the next weeks and months. As the currently active FIFE developers are busy I don't think that anyone of them will take a look into adding RunUO support to FIFE.

Thanks for the links Alambik :-) Do you know anyone who might be interested to explore how well you could integrate FIFE with RunUO?
