Running r2512 on Windows
« on: August 07, 2008, 05:26:28 pm »

Downloaded FIFE_2008.1_r2512_win32.exe and extracted.

Downloaded ActivePython2.5 and installed.

Installed OpenAL.

None of the Python scripts work, all crash Python. Running the tests in test_fife.py mostly crashes Python. The first 8 (testXXX) all display "XXX is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." The rest crash with the same basic Python errors, which I've pasted below.

None of the .log files contain anything, probably because FIFE never got a chance to start.

I'm assuming these are problems with ActivePython, but don't really know.

Any ideas?

It's hard to help you if you don't mention what compiler you are using. Furthermore did you check the win32 build tutorials from the wiki?

It was my understanding that this was the precompiled version ready to go. According the the docs you just follow those three steps (download, install pythom, install openAL) and you're good to go:

Might be a driver issue, I'll investigate.

Please read the README files that comes with the release. It's stated there why test_fife.py is not working for the precompiled release:

This happens with everything, not just the test_fife.py

So the example game, the editor, everything. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I was irritated by the version number you mentioned in the thread and thought that you would have tried to build FIFE from source. Now I see that's you're using the precompiled 2008.1 package.

Are you familiar with debuggers? Your best bet is to use gdb that comes with the win32 compile SDK and get a backtrace this way. That might help us to understand the problem. Are you running Vista or XP? 32 or 64bit?

Compile SDK: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/fife/FIFE_2008.0-r4_win32_SDK.7z

I was not able to get it to run on the machine in question, I still think it's the drivers. The machine is an Alienware running XP and those are the biggest wastes of money out there, as far as I'm concerned. Nothing ever works right. It's been back to the shop, re-imaged, you name it. I just don't have the time or patience to try to run a debugging engine on it.

I tried it on a stock Dell running XP and it ran just fine, no problems at all. So I'm glad to have finally gotten it running on one out of three machines, I'm just unhappy that it's a machine I have very little access to.

You could try to grab the latest sources from the SVN repository and build it on your alienware PC from source. It's rather easy: get the compile SDK, install SVN client, get sourcecode via SVN, unpack the SDK, run a batch file, done.

In case you want to give it a shot, you can find all relevant details here:
