[FIFEdit] The official map editor
« on: March 17, 2009, 08:05:32 am »

>> This is the official attempt to revive the editor development (yeah  :D) <<

On the last FIFE meeting, the developers have agreed to revive the editor development and start to collect proposals for enhancements.

We started a cleanup at the Wiki editor category and so far you can find two articles there:

Your feedback

We would also like to invite everybody who is working with FIFedit to tell us:

  • your current workflow with the editor
  • which feature you miss the most in your daily work with the editor

Of course, everybody else is invited to give feedback about the editor / must-haves for editor tools in general.  ;)

Where to post feedback?

The starting point would be to add comments to this thread, additions to the proposals article are welcome, too.

And - of course: You can join the IRC channel and tell us your ideas :)

Heya Chewie.

I have a request. The plugin in system was in my opinion added way to early in the editors lifetime.
While it was by my request that it was added, some things which are done by plugins should be done
by the core editor.

These guys are the most prevalent examples:
  • Map Editor
  • Layer Tool
  • Object Selector

I'm not sure what to do about it, though - a rewrite is always tempting, but so far the editor is usable.
Maybe just elevate these 'plugin's to a core status and define the interface to the other plugins according to that?

Yip, those would be my candidats for the "core functionality" category, too.

I'd also add
  • camera editor
  • layer editor (maybe integrated in the layertool)
  • instance selector
  • cell / blocker / grid highlighter

I wouldn't mind to do a rewrite if we can agree on a plugin format (for which we need all advices / opinions / hints we can get).
