Game creators corner / Editor feature requests
« on: December 17, 2007, 06:59:58 pm »
Now that a prototype of the editor is running, I'd like to open up a discussion of features to implement. Currently there is a topic in the forums focusing more on the gui aspects of the editor. In this thread I want to focus on *features* required of the editor (rather than visual representation).

To start off this topic, here's a couple ideas me and chewie have been brainstorming in IRC:

1) Ability to edit any layer of the map (rather than just camera layer). This could be presented as a gui selection box. Or alternatively I could hotkey layers to the number keys (this could create problems for more than 10 layers).

2) More complete map selection options. Currently a list of available maps must be hardcoded in scripts. This could be as simple as crawling through the content directory and generating a list of *.xml files.

3) Standalone FIFEdit client. I do like the idea of being able to "embed" FIFEdit in any client. This would allow more integrated development of a game (e.g. being able to playthrough with the editor running, making changes during play). But I see no reason why a stripped-down "edit-only" client can't be made.

Let me know about more ideas.
