Title: Nice Forum
Post by: shevegen on February 03, 2008, 08:57:20 am
Nice forum theme.

Personally I think the colour theme here is a bit better than on the official webpage.
(The official webpage  looks a bit like standard post nuke install or something)

I think however that the colour scheme should be more similar in both forum or webpage, know what I mean? So that a user feels that these things are connected together in "look and feel"

Anyone who remembers syndicate wars, and the colours used therein, go and look at http://freesynd.sourceforge.net/ what i mean. Yes, the colours are a bit ugly etc.. but it feels very much like the game, and thus i think this is a good idea.

Anyway, I am not to critisize you guys! Just saying Hi, and nice work so far, keep it up! :D

Ah, thank you :) I'm glad that you like it. The forum redesign was done very recently so the official website and the wiki still have their old designs. There are plans to improve the wiki and the website and eventually these two will also look and function better.

Seeing as you are doing the 'thank you's, I'm guessing you're the creator of this theme, so I'll be directing this feedback at you:

To be strictly honest with you, I feel like this theme gets a bit depressing. Don't get be wrong, creating a unique theme is an achievement in itself, but I just don't feel like this forum best represents the FIFE engine.

I had a look at various commercial and free game engines, and as you can see, most of them go for a more smooth-edged brightly coloured design, giving a more edgy and futuristic feel to it, which easily emits over to the whole picture of what the engine is like.

A quick list of theme-suggestions:

And just a question: Are you also in charge of designing/maintaining the frontpage (CMS)?

Just my personal preference but I really like the current look of the forums theme. While it features dark colours (and that is usually something that annoys me when it comes to the look of forums as well) I think it works pretty good for us in this case :-)

Concerning the website itself: I've commited this crime :-) Back in 2005 when the project started I've put something simple together. It would be great to have a consistent look among website, wiki and forums but before we tackle a website redesign I would like to finish the wiki frontpage restructuring first, see:

FIFE is an engine used for post-apocalyptic games after all *g*
Even in the Island demo, behind the caribbean scenery - desaster, toxic chemicals and giant mutated bees are lurking!

 ;D

Eh. I just like the absence of any web2.0 bling.

Okey. If it's just me then I'll shut ever obediently the hell up ;)

When the time comes for this, will you also maybe be considering making use of another CMS? postnuke ain't exactly the most highly endorsed CMS out there. If you're into the php-nuke style CMSs, I'd still highly recommend PHP-Fusion (http://www.opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=464) as a widely more supported and further developer, yet very similar software. Now I know that a CMS usually comes down to preference, so I'm gonna try and not get too involved in this (I'm glad you had SMF already.., if you'd been using phpBB, I would've whined about that as well, I can promise you that). Just making sure you're aware of what's out there.

I'm in favor of not stressing over the web site(s) unless there is actually a usability / information visibility issue.  It's easy to spend way too much time on it, and/or get stuck in an endless cycle of revision of the web site instead of the project itself.

I choose a dark theme because I wanted to spare those sensitive, 3 in the morning, been-on-the-comp-all-day eyes :)

Thank you! Bright colors on a computer screen is like staring at a lightbulb, and not like paper which they want to emulate.

I would actually prefer if you made the background colors even darker so you get more contrast between the text and background.
